Schwi-dach-downs Dachshunds

Welcome to Schwi-dach-downs, where double long hot dogs roam.  We are breeders of home grown Dachshunds and whether you call them dachshunds, doxies, dachsies, doxis, dashie, dashies, hot dogs, wiener dogs, frankfurter dogs, German sausage dogs, or whatever else, these little dogs are guaranteed to steal your heart! Very loyal, and brave far beyond their size, they are suitable for all ages from children to the elderly, and are happy with city or country living. Because of their size, however, they are not suited to outdoor living, so do consider what sort of accommodations you can provide for your new best friend. They will in return give you a lifetime of love and devotion, and after being owned by a dachshund you will swear that there is no other dog as clever, funny, smart, or as close to being human as your doxie.

Dachshund Breed History

The earliest records of the dachshund breed date back to several German woodcutter books first published in 1560 AD. This breed was developed in Germany to pursue badgers into their burrows. Thus the name Dachshund, which in German means badger hound. Badger hunting was considered a great sport and later smaller variety was developed to pursue first fox and later rabbits and other small varmints. These small, or “miniature dachshunds have become increasingly popular as pets. The dachshund is the national dog of Germany and is now grouped with the hounds although this was not always the case.
A dachshund is noted for his loud voice, which is very helpful in directing his master to his exact location when working under ground. With his tapered head, deep keel, long tapered body with short sturdy legs, he is well suited for his underground work, not to forget the importance of his long whip-like tail by which many a dachshund was extracted from a hole. Couple all this marvelous machinery with his brave heart and strong jaws and he becomes a formidable foe.

Dachshund Varieties: Sizes, Coats, Colors, and Patterns

Dachshunds come in two sizes, standard dachshunds, and miniature dachshunds and three coat types, smooth coat or short coat, long coat, or longhair and wire coat, and four base coat colors: red, black, chocolate, and wild boar or sable. You can also have dilutions of these basic colors which add more colors, ie black diluted becomes blue, and chocolate diluted becomes issabella. The ee dilute red factor when showing will render red a light cream which at birth may appear almost white, to a strawberry cream color but these ee reds will darken over time to some shade of red. You will find these dogs often described as “American Cream”, or “strawberry cream”. This ee dilute factor will not allow any black hairs to show on the dog. Do not confuse these dogs with the English Cream dogs out of England. Their cream color is obtained from a completely different set of genes. These genes are known as the chinchilla dilution factor, or chch chinchilla gene, which is usually referred to as English Cream. This renders red a lovely shade of cream and lightens with age. Unlike the ee gene which does not allow any black hairs to show the chinchilla gene does not affect the black or chocolate hairs on the dog so one can have a cream dog with or without black shading, or brindling, black and cream dogs, and chocolate and cream dogs. There are four coat patterns, solid color, with or without points, brindle, piebald, and dappled. With the ability to have any color and pattern combination with any coat type the dachshund is one of the most varied dogs on earth. Therefor every dachshund puppy is unique and special with a unique compliment of genes. You may find more information on genetics and which are dominate genes and which are recessive genes. We also have information on the “deadly gene” on our genetics page.
